Hey folks,

Here is a video of the tunnel going through Rouen in France

Anyone notice the similarity between this tunnel and our tunnel????

Keep on driving...........

Well I suppose in many respects it is like the Hindhead tunnel, but then most dual carriageway road tunnels tend to look like it - round, two lanes of traffic going in the same direction. Dark - with lights. Big bill for building it. Sadly for the people of Rouen, their tunnel is not on the road to Portsmouth!

When I was (quite a bit) younger, I often used to visit a French family who lived in the Rouen suburb which was fortunate enough to be bypassed by this tunnel. The day it opened, (near Christmas IIRC) lots of people were literally in the street celebrating. Despite the loss of through-traffic the area has done OK ever since and managed to hold its own, with most local shops and retailers still in business and benefiting from the relative calm.

I hope that Hindhead is able to hold its own as well.

While I haven't yet found an excuse to travel up to the Hindhead tunnel myself (I'm on the South Coast and Diesel is too pricey to waste) I have been through the French tunnel and it seems much more claustrophobic than its UK equivalents such as the Round Hill tunnel on the A20 or the Southwick tunnel on the A27. UK tunnels FTW!

While writing, I also wanted to say a HUGE 'Thanks' to gummybear for all his work on this blog over the years. I have followed it since the beginning and found his enthusiasm for the tunnel absolutely fantastic. Also thanks to the men and women who designed and built this project - it's nice to have something that's the biggest/longest in the country so relatively close to home.

To everyone else, thanks for (like me) contributing to the cost of the project and I wish you many miles of safe and more relaxing driving thanks to this remarkable achievement.
