I see the Highways Agency webpage says tunnel opening - End of July

Any news? any action? surely someone somewhere must have an idea when these tunnels are going live?

This is the response I've received to an email I sent asking about the opening date, doesn't sound promising for any time this week:

hank you for your e-mail to the Highways Agency.

In answer to your question, some four and a half years ago we committed to opening the Hindhead tunnel in July 2011. We are still on track to do this and final testing of the tunnel systems is taking place. We had hoped for an opening in early July, but the safety of tunnel users is our number one priority and, although the emergency exercise was a success, we believe the opening will be towards the end of July.

Official announcement regarding the exact tunnel opening date will be made in the next couple of weeks.

Kind Regards,

Charlotte

I must adnit it is a little frustratiing getting excited about it opening and then it not happening but if there are saftey issues and then someone had an accident you would sue their backsides quick as flash for opeing it early!

Come on folks get a grip we all want it open but we also want it as safe as possible!

Just look at what happened to the titanic!

e-mail from Highways Agency today:
Thank you for your email to the Highways Agency. The tunnel is due to open in July and the public interest is mounting every day. We were hoping to open it near the end of July, and the official announcement will by done by press release in the next couple of weeks and also updated on our Website.
There is a link on the site for e-mail notification

Hi Gummy, have just found yr blog which will be useful.
I was travelling S on the A3 on Sun and there were diversion signs that took us off then back onto the A3 going N for some way then off round lots off small country roads and added ages onto our journey. Other traffic seemed to be ignoring the diversion signs. I may be travelling that way later in the week, should I ignore the signs this time? Does anyone know what it was about. It was OK returning N later on.

Are you trying to say that an iceberg might cause a problem?
;-)

Well done on the blog...

Radio Solent said on the travel news last week that Southbound will open on the 20th and Northbound on the 24th.
Has anybody else heard this elsewhere?
I see someone mentioned an emergency services colleague saying the 20th, so this appears to tally up?
Not long to go now...

The Northbound section north of the tunnel looks like it still has some road building to be done to marry up the new bit with the old bit where the current diversion start.

Does that make sense?

The traffic has got bad again recently with all the extra cones.

Hurry up and open the bluddy tunnel!

Anonymous said...

Time to open how much longer do the highways agency need?

Anonymous said...

Where did all the earth go they dug from the tunnel...??

Anonymous said...

I agree. They took the average speed signs down, and made us watch the countdown to road opening for months; down to the very last minute before deciding not to open it.

It should have been handled better.

Shall we all rebel and drive round the tunnel when it finally opens?

Anyone? Hello? Anyone?

100,000 hits to the blog is a fantasic achievement. However if anyone else checks it as much as I to discover if the holes are open yet- there could be a total of ten people that use it.

I asked a contractor on Monday morning and he said the 20th for the south bound.

His mate quickly corrected him, the 26th apparently.

Still no official date (HA 13th July)

The local scuttlebut is that there are some delays in producing the Health and Safety Report - that all the features etc are in place. So I guess the MS Paperclip is not working correctly

Another exercise in the tunnel? Or an incident? Coming south through the works at 3.35 this afternoon there were two fire engines with blues flashing heading towards the north portal (on the new southbound carriageway). Or maybe just the fire crews getting experience of the environment?

Vernon said...

They would be mad to announce an opening date in advance as that would just attract hordes of petrol heads and cause chaos. They should quietly just open the southbound tunnel when they are ready, followed by the northbound when the extra connection work has been completed.
This might upset the local bigwigs who want to bask in the reflected glory of an opening ceremony - too bad. As for transport minister Philip Hammond - he is far too busy being humiliated on Newsnight to have time for any tape cutting

Vernon, I think you are absolutely right. Surely the ideal scenario for the HA is that one morning some guy is driving up towards the lights at Hindhead, looks in his mirror and suddenly realises that there is literally no-one behind him anymore. A bit like the points on a railway, switching you from one track to another.

workmen were manually brushing up on the new north portal carriage ways at 14.30 today - this weekend???

Vernon said...

Travelled A3 northbound lunchtime today (Friday).
A new infestation of cones for 1 mile north of Liss roundabout. The only sign of any workmen was on the road works sign itself - the usual picture of a bloke with a shovel - otherwise no yellow jackets in sight.
Ditto for the coned area between Liphook and Hazel Grove but there was some sort of scaffolding under Miss James Bridge.
As Meridian TV News assured its viewers 4 weeks ago that the tunnel would open 'first week of July' I phoned the newsroom and suggested they do a follow up story on what's gone wrong.

Well at the Tunnel Open Day, I heard someone say 18 July (Monday). Obviously it seems to have been put back by a few days.

Beardy said...

hm! Snagging the electrical systems seems to be taking longer than expected. Local radio seems disinterested in the proposed opening - Oh why tease us with the bores so bright - at night they are a sight, but maybe when we get to use it, the systems will finally fuse it? Lol....
C'mon, HA, give us a date, a celeb to open it and a fancy name... How about Cameron opens one end and Clegg opens the other - from one twin bore to another? Enjoy.

Looks like you might just get the 120,000 hits before the tunnel opens - there's only 101 to go!
