I love history like that. It got me thinking, im not a hindhead local, a mere commuter. But when I travel northbound and look right somewhere near the merc garage, there is an old wreck of a building proped up with scafolding. Is that in the pictures and what the hell is that place? Why didn't they knock it down when building this project?

Hi Ben,

The old building is called The Spaniard. It used a pub/nightclub many many years ago.

It was totally gutted by fire but it cannot be knocked down as it is a grade 2 listed building so alas has stood like for as long as I can remember.

Hope that helps!

p.s should knock it down and build a McDonalds!

Great old pics!A reminder of simpler times. Although I remember driving up the A3 back in the 1970s, and even then the traffic was a mere fraction of what it is now.

The Spaniard was also known as the Seven Thorns Hotel. If you look at the article on the Grayshott Village Archive website there are a couple of pictures showing how it used to look in c1906 and c1920. Also on one of the Photos of the Month there is another photo from a different angle: http://www.grayshott-archive.org.uk/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=3

Thanks for info on that I wondered what the building was as well... I'll have another look tonight when I roll past in the Royal mail truck... gis a wave.... ;-)

Theres nothing of any interest whatsoever in Hindhead, makes you wonder why they didn't save all the trees and just bulldoze through the middle. would have saved all that digging.

Some of the buildings are very old and of historical interest, therefore you are wrong.

All interesting but when will it open? Any inside knowledge.
PS comments like bulldozer it through should be removed from what is an excellent and useful blog.

The current rumour is the 24th July, southbound initially with the northbound opening a few hours later.

24th? That's Sunday, which doesn't sound very likely from everything else that's been said...

This is according the Highways Agency website, although it has now changed to 30th July.

See this discussion: http://www.grayshott.com/wordpress/groups/grayshott-noticeboard/forum/topic/tunnel-opening/

Why wont anybody from the Highways agency say when the opening ceremony is going to be and whats going to happen. This is becoming a PR disaster.

The Highways Agency got to this stage with the Southwick Tunnel in Sussex, and then at the last moment realised they had miscalculated the size and an HGV would touch the tunnel wall if it stayed in the slow lane, so maybe that's why there not stating a date.

Wonderful photos of Hindhead past. It seems to have changed very little (apart from traffic). So perhaps these are also photos of Hindhead future!

Thanks Gummybear thank Jakec the pictures of the spaniard / hotel are fascinating I wonder who owns it now, its crazy it just sits there in that state. Its strange to think that after all these years of sitting at Hindhead lights that I am just days away from probably never seeing the place again in the rest of my life.

For those of us who live close to the Hindhead lights, it's strange being just a few days from never seeing those queues again. Yippee!!

This is from the latest from the Grayshott website listed before....

The tunnel will be opened on Wednesday 27th. July in the SOUTHBOUND direction only, following the opening ceremony which will be from 9am to noon, approximately. Northbound traffic will use the current routing until the opening of the northbound bore. The Police will organise a rolling convoy system when the bollards are removed.

The NORTHBOUND bore will be opened on Friday 29th. July, in time for the evening rush hour approximately.

The Parish Council and I will be posting updates on grayshott.com over the next week or so, about future closures to the Headley Road. We have mentioned these closures in the past, which are connected with the new roundabout to be built in August at the junction of the Headley Road with the old A3, near the petrol station

Three hours for an opening ceremony - what are they doing blessing every inch of the road?? Sacrificing the a Devil's Punchbowl sheep.

Sounds like the Hindhead and Haslemere Silver Band will be out of puff after marching through the tunnel in both directions.

Did notice the other day the Petrol station has closed, and the Indian restaurent on the corner had THREE customers... most I've seen is two so a record!!!

I am ill in bed today, and the noise from the lorries thundering by is awful, the bed vibrates, every day seems like a year until this tunnel is finally opened.
