Speed Limits

Howdy everyone

Right for all of you that have been commenting and emailing me the speed limit in the tunnels will be national. In case of emergencies and the like then speed limit will be reduced down to 40 with a contraflow system in place.

The average speed cameras are there for our safety and to keep traffic moving in a steady flow through.

I find it amazing that people are going to bouycot the tunnel if it was a 40 limit.

Come on guys it's going to make our life better.

Keep on diggin...............

To be honest to cut the speed limit from 70mph to 40 just because it went underground would have been a ludicrous and unsound decision as it would cause unnecessary slowing of traffic and therefore bunching which is far more dangerous than driving at a continuous higher speed. You might as well cut the speed limit if you go under trees on that basis. I think 60mph would be adequate as the road will be well lit( well at least I hope it will be) and no different from driving along a properly illuminated dual carriageway at night time. Obviously if there is an incident then perhaps 40mph could be too fast. The trouble is the vast majority think that speed is the cause of most accidents. It isn't. Poor driving is.

Speed and lane control within the tunnel is a sensible procedure, especially in the event of a breakdown or other incident. Its not the speed limit that causes the congestion it is the incident or just volume of traffic. And I agree with Cybot, it is poor driving, boy racers, tailgaters and lane switchers who are the menace, not the cameras.

Bunching more dangerous than high speed? I think I'd rather be lightly hit by slow car getting too close to me than be hit by a car at 70mph.

The main concern now is where the next potential traffic problem will be and that's the 50mph Guildford section.

Thank you gummybear & Tomodo for the information and confirming that it will be a 70mph stretch of road, unless it's working under degraded conditions.

Much happier now. :-)

Still not happy about the SPECs cameras though, I suppose they have to find a way to pay for it & that's one way to do it.

Oh forgot you won't be doing 50 around Guildford, as the idiots are going to put traffic lights on the roundabout outside Tesco's in Guildford so you'll have tailbacks onto the A3!

DUH!

Cybot said...

Tornado I said a higher speed not necessarily a high speed. You obviously are one of those people who think speed kills.

Doc Martin said...

Speed doesn't kill, it's the sudden impact which does or the resulting injuries to the vital organs which does.

If speed killed, we wouldn't be able to drive, fly, travel by train etc. There's one way speed would kill & that's with super fast acceleration (we're talking sci fi speeds, like the USS Enterprise in Star Trek), where the acceleration, is so great it would turn you into a bloody mess on the wall. :-/

re. traffic lights at the Tesco roundabout

The current set up does not give priority to the traffic coming off the sliproad which is why there are tailbacks now. The traffic lights should help alleviate the problem.

Having said all this they do seem to have spent a lot of money putting up 40 signs on the new unopened section of the road. Take a look the next time you go past.

this is just making me laugh now

Thank god we have only got about 7 weeks until you all find for certain!

Tomodo said...

Ha indeed. I'll just be happily cruising through the tunnel, just enjoying the new better journey times and not worrying about speed cameras or speed limits.

Nutcombe said...

Yep, can't wait.

Paul Arnold, Balfour Beatty, Mott McDonald have done a stirling job and its time the whingers and doom mongers wound their collective necks in.

Doc Martin said...

I might have one look, but I still think I'll be using the A31/A32 instead.

As I go to Fareham anyway.

The 40 signs that are on the unopened part of road are FTMS signs and rotate to show different speed settings. They are being tested now witch is why they show 40,they will show this speed when there is an incident in the tunnel.Normal speed will be 70.
I hope this helps clear the matter

Doc Martin said...

FTMS signs? Err, what's that in English please?

BTW, it's which, not witch, as that's what I'm married too. ;-)

Thanks for the grammar correction, FTMS fixed text message signs,

Doc Martin said...

Cheers for that.

One final thing.

What day does it fully open? Both bores.

He's worried about an occasional 40mph limit through the tunnel yet chooses to use a route with numerous 30mph limits plus the notoriously congested Farnham bypass.

The wag who amended the signs on the A272 between the A32 and A3 to read 'Bikers don't think' is right.

Doc Martin said...

Really?

A31 Guildford - Farnham 60, 50 through the Farnham Xroads, 70 to Alton, 60 to Farringdon, 30 for ¼mile, 60 to East Tisted, 40 for ½mile, 60 to West Meon, 30 for ½mile, 60 to Warnford, 40 through there, back to 60 to Corhampton, ¼mile of 30 through there, 60 all the way to Wickham & 50mph into Fareham.

It's also a darn sight more attractive than grotty Surrey & I'm one of the more thoughtful bikers, unlike the vast majority of car drivers who cause a significant number of accidents because they don't look at junctions & just pull out or don't judge the speed of bikes, bikers are trained to cope with car drivers inadequacies & inability to take bikes in to consideration.

Obviously Speechless you fall into the latter category of being an inconsiderate car driver & that comes from someone who rides a bike & drives a car, so does consider bikers.

As for the sign it proves that at least one car driver is a complete dickhead.

Don't tell me Speechless you're a woman, which wouldn't surprise me in the least!

Hey guys,

It's good to have a debate and we are all entitled to our opinions but please can we not name call and use foul and abusive language.

My kids look at this and we should rise above it and be grown ups.

Tomodo said...

This time I'll agree with Doc - the A31/A32 is a nicer route and it's a little bit shorter too!

Good luck to those who boycot the tunnel , its a long way round to avoid it. Mugs .
